Greene County Register Records

Greene County Register of Deeds records cover marriage licenses, certified birth, death, and marriage certificates, deeds, assumed business names, and related land-record filings. A Greene County Register of Deeds records search can begin online for indexed records, but official records and certified vital-record copies still come from the office. The Register is a secondary records office in the county record system, separate from the Clerk of Superior Court, which keeps court case files, divorce judgments, estates, and special proceedings.

Greene County Register Office

The Greene County Register of Deeds is located in the courthouse at 301 N. Greene Street in Snow Hill. The mailing address is PO Box 86, Snow Hill, NC 28580, and the office phone is (252) 747-3620. Bridgett Sasser is listed as Register of Deeds, with Julia Allen listed as assistant. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding holidays.

This office is important because North Carolina splits vital records and court records by custodian. The Register handles marriage licenses and certified copies of birth, death, and marriage certificates. The Clerk of Superior Court handles divorce judgments, court case files, estate files, and special proceedings. A person looking for a marriage certificate should not start with the Clerk, and a person looking for a divorce decree should not start with the Register.

Greene County Register Records

The Register of Deeds is the local office for recorded instruments and county-level vital-record services listed on the county page. Online index searches are available from 1875 to the present through the Courthouse Computer Systems portal. The county page also states that the web index is for information and convenience, while official records are kept in the Register of Deeds office.

  • Marriage license issuance and returned marriage records.
  • Certified birth, death, and marriage certificate applications.
  • Deeds and real-estate instruments recorded with the county.
  • E-recordings, except maps and highway rights-of-way.
  • Assumed name and small-business information handled by the office.
  • Official records maintained in the Register of Deeds office.

Deeds to be recorded must have a tax form signed by the Greene County Tax Office. That local rule matters for recording transactions, but it is separate from searching already recorded index entries.

The official online index for Greene County Register of Deeds records is hosted by Courthouse Computer Systems. The research file identifies the index as available from 1875 through the present. Older deed and marriage research often starts there because Greene County has many records tied to historical property, estate, and family history work.

  1. Open the Greene County Register of Deeds online index.
  2. Search by party name, date range, document type, or other fields made available by the portal.
  3. Use book, page, instrument, or indexed party details to identify the record.
  4. Contact the Register of Deeds when an official copy, certified vital certificate, or office-held record is needed.
  5. Confirm fees and identity requirements before mailing a certificate request.

Note: The online index is useful for research, but certified vital-record copies come from the Register's application process.

Greene County Vital Records

For certified birth, death, and marriage certificates, the Register page gives two request channels. In person, the requester completes the certificate application, presents a driver's license or DMV picture ID, and pays $10 cash. By mail, the requester completes the application, checks the correct relationship line, signs the bottom section, includes a copy of state-issued picture ID or driver's license, includes a $10 money order payable to Greene County Register of Deeds, and includes a self-addressed postage-paid envelope.

Mail certificate requests go to Greene County Register of Deeds, PO Box 86, Snow Hill, NC 28580. The county page says the office will return the certificate as soon as possible. No personal checks are accepted for mailed certificate requests based on the research notes. Marriage licenses are separate from certified certificate copies and use a $60 cash-only fee.

Greene County Marriage Licenses

Marriage licenses are one of the core Register of Deeds services. Each adult applicant must have a certified birth certificate, state-issued picture ID or driver's license, and Social Security card. A non-U.S. resident must have a passport. Anyone previously married must provide a divorce decree or spouse's death certificate. Applicants under 18 must contact the office before relying on the adult-license process.

The marriage license worksheet collects the information needed for the local application. Regardless of the county where the ceremony occurs, the license must be returned to the county where it was issued. For Greene County, that means returning it to the Register of Deeds that issued the license.

Greene County Deed Recording

Deeds and related land records are Register of Deeds records, while court proceedings that affect real estate can still live in court files. The court-record research notes that deeds and most real-estate records are kept by the Register of Deeds, while foreclosures, evictions, partitions, condemnations, estates, divorces, judgments, and liens on real property may be in the Clerk's court files when they are court proceedings.

The Register accepts e-recordings except maps and highway rights-of-way. A deed to be recorded must have a tax form signed by the Greene County Tax Office. The research includes a deed information form from Greene County, but the captured screenshot for that PDF failed because it downloaded instead of rendering as a page. For current recording steps, users should rely on the live Register of Deeds page and office confirmation.

Note: For a court judgment, estate, foreclosure, or divorce record, use the Clerk of Superior Court rather than the Register of Deeds.

Greene County Record Request Routes

The Register of Deeds handles office-held Register records, but not every public record request belongs there. Greene County local-government administrative records use the county public information process and may be submitted to PublicInformation@GreeneCountyNC.gov. Judicial Branch court records use the court system and Clerk access channels. Choosing the right route avoids delay because each office can only certify or provide the records it keeps.
